Islamia Primary School was founded in 1983 by Yusuf Islam, the singer/songwriter who was known as Cat Stevens until his conversion to Islam in 1978.
The school was the first Muslim school which was furnished with state funding by the UK Government after a long and arduous campaign and several early rejections on the journey to grant maintained/voluntary aided status. Indeed, such was the campaign that King Charles, then His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, visited to officially inaugurate the school’s status on 10 May, 2000 praising the school for its innovative approach to the curriculum by combining both secular and faith education tenets. As the school moved into the state sector it was visited by many delegations and visitors both nationally and internationally and was highly praised for its work in education and in faith based teachings within a national education framework. In 2013, the school won the Global Peace and Unity Education Award for Excellence, for UK primary schools.
To this day, the school continues to progress and move forward and in February, 2022 the school was once again awarded a Good OfSTED rating.
