Mental Health and Wellbeing at Islamic Primary School
At Islamic Primary School, we believe that true wellbeing encompasses the holistic balance of mind, body, and soul. Guided by Islamic principles, we aim to nurture an environment that supports the mental, emotional, and spiritual health of our entire school community—students, staff, and parents alike.
What is Wellbeing
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines wellbeing as:
"A state in which an individual realises their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to their community."
Wellbeing is not just the absence of illness; it is a holistic sense of health and harmony, involving physical, emotional, mental, and social aspects. Islam complements this understanding by highlighting the spiritual dimension of wellbeing. Allah (SWT) reminds us in the Qur’an:
"Indeed, with hardship comes ease." (Qur’an 94:6)
This verse reassures us that challenges are a natural part of life, but through patience, faith, and resilience, relief and comfort can be achieved.
Wellbeing in Islam
Islam places great emphasis on mental and spiritual health as key components of overall wellbeing. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"The strong person is not the one who throws their opponent to the ground. The strong person is the one who controls themselves in a fit of anger." (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
This hadith highlights the importance of self-control and emotional intelligence as crucial aspects of maintaining a balanced and healthy state of mind. Developing patience, gratitude, and reliance on Allah (SWT) are key to achieving true peace and fulfilment.
